The Craftsman Behind the Work

Walter Lynn Collett

Located in the beautiful Santa Lucia Mountains near the Pacific Ocean on the central coast of California, I have been an architectural mill rite and fabricator most of my life, involved in many historical preservation and reconstruction projects.

With a historical preservation background and a keen interest in all things military—along with an extreme appreciation for the men and women who fought for our freedoms—it was only natural to combine these passions to create historically accurate, stunningly beautiful, and highly detailed dioramas and models.

Recently, I was honored to be invited to produce models for the Estrella Warbirds Museum, a testament to the quality and historical accuracy of my work.

The Craft & Process

Each piece we create undergoes a rigorous process of research, planning, and execution to ensure historical accuracy and exceptional quality.

Historical Research

We begin with extensive research, consulting historical records, photographs, and expert sources to ensure every detail is period-accurate. This foundation of knowledge informs all subsequent stages of the creation process.

Design & Planning

We meticulously plan each element of the diorama or model, creating detailed sketches, determining scale, and selecting appropriate materials that will achieve the desired historical effect and longevity.

Material Selection

We utilize a multitude of materials—wood, foam, stone, plaster, epoxy resins, and more—selecting each for its appropriate properties and historical accuracy. The right materials are crucial for achieving authentic results.

Crafting & Construction

With traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques, we build each component with precision. Whether architectural elements or landscape features, every piece is crafted to scale with attention to historical detail.

Detail & Finishing

The magic is in the details—weathering effects, accurate coloring, and minute elements that bring the piece to life. This stage often involves specialized techniques to achieve historically accurate aging and environmental effects.

Final Presentation

Each completed work is mounted, displayed, and documented to preserve and showcase its craftsmanship. We provide detailed information about the historical context and significance of the scene or structure depicted.

The Workshop

Nestled in the Santa Lucia Mountains near the Pacific Ocean, our workshop is equipped with specialized tools and materials for creating museum-quality dioramas and models. The tranquil setting inspires creativity while our extensive collection of reference materials ensures historical accuracy.

Every project begins and ends in this space—a place where history, craftsmanship, and artistry converge to create works that educate, commemorate, and inspire.
